This Year's Project: Veterinary Care Expense

About Our Organization

The Siouxland Humane Society, established in 1889, is the only non-profit open admission full-service shelter in Siouxland dedicated to animal welfare. We are solely supported by donations, fundraising, and income from programs and services. Our mission is to provide programs and services that promote the humane treatment of animals in the Siouxland area. We are the only Siouxland area animal welfare organization that provides programs and services for the community to support the people and their pets in the area.  Please support us, so we may continue to support the needs of those in our community.

Through our Surrender/Adoption Programs we provide shelter, food and veterinary care to thousands of pets each year – and no pet is ever turned away. We find forever homes for 100% of the adoptable pets, far exceeding the national average of 37%! Our Volunteer program lets people help in and out of the shelter. Offsite adoption events place pets into new homes via offsite business locations. Pet Therapy pairs volunteers and pets with local nursing homes/care facilities. Residents benefit physically, socially, and emotionally. Breed Rescue moves pets both in and out of the Shelter. Cruelty Investigative Services assist law enforcement with sheltering, investigation and prosecution of abuse/neglect cases. Our Emergency Sheltering, Veterinary Assistance, and Pet Food Bank programs, all help when people need assistance.

These and our many other programs and services make a huge difference in the lives of the people and pets in Siouxland!

Current Project: Veterinary Care Expense

Pets are surrendered for various reasons, such as moving, financial constraints, lack of time, or simply because their owners don't want them.

Unfortunately, upon arrival, some pets have not received the proper care or medical attention and treatment they require, leaving these expenses to be covered by the shelter. Medical expenses constitute one of the most substantial costs incurred by shelters, including surgeries, vet bills, x-rays, medications, and even specialized dietary needs, all of which accumulate rapidly.

This is why we have chosen Veterinary Care Expense as the focus of our project.

In a perfect world, all pets would have loving, fur-ever homes, and no pet would ever endure abuse or neglect. However, until that ideal becomes a reality, they need heroes like you.

Please join us in making a difference one paw at a time by contributing to those pets that need your help the most.

Regardless of the amount, whether big or small, every donation adds up and can truly make a significant difference in the life of a pet in need.

Past Projects

  • Pet Retention - Keeping Families and Pets Together

    Project Details

With the world full of uncertainties, the one thing the Siouxland Humane Society knows and understands is how important that bond is with people and their pets. We want pet owners to know we are here to help and they do have a choice.

When unforeseen circumstances arise sometimes it leaves a pet owner thinking they have nowhere to turn, and no other choice but to surrender their beloved pet to a shelter. Too often pets are surrendered due to finances. A family member may have lost their job. Health issues may have occurred or just not being able to afford pet food during a difficult time. Our project will provide resources to help.

We believe the best home for any pet is the home of someone who already loves them. Helping pet owners become aware of all the resources available to help them keep their beloved pet is something we believe is very vital not only for the pet but also for the owner. Our pets are more than pets they are family!

The goal of this project is simple: to save the lives of pets by keeping them out of shelters, and with the families that love them. We achieve this through:

Veterinary Care and Assistance – Unexpected emergency medical assistance.

Pet Food & Supply Bank – Giving some help when finances are tight.

Spay/Neuter Assistance – Helping with the cost of getting a pet fixed.

Behavioral Assistance and /or Training – Obedience training makes for a better family member.

Temporary Housing for pets - When people are temporarily displaced, short-term housing for pets.

We want to help keep people and pets in Siouxland together! Please help us help them, help make that difference and donate today!

  • A New Program & Services Vehicle

    Project Details

This year we are focused on a new program and services vehicle.  A vehicle is the “driving” force behind many of the SHS programs and services.

A new vehicle will impact our mission and programs and services in a huge way.  Many of which are dependent on the use of a vehicle. This includes:

Spay/Neuter & Veterinary Care Programs transports hundreds of sick, injured, or neglected animals for care or for Spay/Neuter surgeries to/from veterinarians every year.

The “Best Friends” Volunteer Program has many out-of-shelter projects each month, with dozens annually – public relations events, advocacy, foster care placements, and many educational events.

Educational services and outreach programs, dozens of visits to schools, youth groups, senior groups, and civic organizations.  We educate about responsible pet care and humane treatment of animals.

Animal cruelty/neglect investigations which may include field trips with local law enforcement for investigative purposes and the removal and rehabilitation of animals from neglected situations.

Pet Facilitated Therapy visits happen monthly and pairs volunteers and pets with nursing homes.  Residents benefit physically, socially, and emotionally through interaction with the pets.

Offsite adoption programs at local businesses happens several weekends each month and finds homes for hundreds of pets annually.  This helps us further save lives and promotes our mission in the area.

Animal Rescue Services to and from rescues and animal shelters.  Moving animals into our Shelter when our census is low, or out when we are at capacity, helps save lives in the area.  Hundreds of animals’ lives are saved each year from these transports.

  • Emergency Pet Vetting

    Project Details

Our project for the Siouxland Big Give: Emergency Pet Vetting

One thing we have noticed this year is the increase of pets coming into the shelter needing emergency vetting for one reason or another. Rather it is surgery for stones, intestinal blockage, dental work, placing a pet on a special diet/food, or insulin for a diabetic cat/dog in need. The unexpected costs add up quickly and can be quite deterring on any non-profit budget.

We do rely on our Fundraising efforts to help with the many needs of our shelter. This year has been quite trying and challenging as some of our events have been canceled due to Covid, and that is why we and the critters need your help more than ever! A saying that is often heard in an animal’s world is “when I needed a hand I found a paw.”

  • Pet Retention Program

    Project Details

Many people think they have to surrender a beloved pet to a shelter, even though they don’t want to. Helping owners become aware of all the resource available to help them keep their beloved pet is something we believe is very vital not only for the pet but, also for the owners. We believe the best home for any pet is the home of someone who already loves them and can provide the necessary care. Our pets are more than pets they are family!

So with a pet retention program and resources in place to help we want to help keep pets in their homes. The goal of a pet retention program is to provide support and peace of mind to pet owners who are experiencing difficulties. There is nothing more difficult than having to make a decision to pay the rent or provide care for the family pet. Too often, pets are surrendered due to finances. Problems might be a landlord who won’t allow the animal, a behavior or health issue, or just being able to afford pet food during a difficult time. Our project will provide resources to help.

The goal of this project is a simple one; to save the lives of pets by keeping them out of shelters, and with the families that love them. We achieve this through:

Pet Food & Supply Bank - Giving a bit of help when finances are tight.

Veterinary Care and Assistance - Unexpected emergency medical assistance.

Spay/ Neuter Assistance - Helping with the cost of getting a pet fixed.

Behavioral Assistance and/or Training - Obedience training makes a better family member.

Temporary Housing for pets - When people are temporarily displaced, short term housing for pets.

We want to help keep the people and pets in Siouxland together! Pets are more than just pets they are family! Please help us help them and donate today!
