Celebrating Community Foundation is a non-profit Iowa corporation that is in the process of creating a humanitarian project, which is rooted in the realms of history, sculptural art and education. The intention is to memorialize and honor individual advocates who have worked to promote and enhance justice and equality for Siouxland residents. The mission of Celebrating Community Foundation is "To celebrate the unity and awareness of our communities by recognizing and honoring courageous persons who sought justice and equality."
Celebrating Community Project is one of the largest public art projects in the history of Siouxland. Art, community, and inspiration are the center of this project. A uniquely integrated urban sculpture park adjacent to the Martin Luther King Transportation Center in downtown Sioux City recognizes and celebrates leaders who advocated for marginalized groups and promoted positive, creative change in the Siouxland community. Life-sized illuminated bronze busts representing each of 13 categories are permanently displayed (8 have been installed thus far). These traditional elements are complemented by an illuminated abstract steel sculpture measuring 23'x49'x5' and inspired by the Martin Luther King, Jr. quotation "The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice." Phases 1 and 2 have been installed and were dedicated on October 1, 2015 and October 6, 2016 respectively. Phase 3, the final stage of the project, will be dedicated on October 4, 2018.
