This Year's Project: Fridges for Families
About Our Organization
Seeking to put God's love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope. Serving Woodbury, Plymouth, and Sioux Counties in Iowa, Dakota County in Nebraska and Union County in South Dakota, Siouxland Habitat for Humanity builds new and rehabilitates simple, existing homes and advocates for safe and affordable housing. As a non-profit, non-denominational Christian housing organization, we provide an opportunity for low income families to increase their independence through home ownership and educational opportunities. We offer a hand up, not a hand out.
Initial qualification to become a homeowner is based on three main criteria: need, willingness to partner and ability to pay. Families who are selected for our program are called Partner Families. They work hard for their homes. In addition to a down payment and monthly mortgage payments, partner families invest up to 500 hours building their own home and other Habitat projects. Habitat houses are sold to families at no profit and are financed with affordable, no-interest mortgage payments. The payments are then used to build additional Habitat homes.
Current Project: Fridges for Families
We don't know about you, but for a nonprofit based in construction, we are definitely still feeling the effects of COVID supply chain issues. One of the biggest challenges we still face is refrigerators. Habitat is very fortunate that Whirlpool is a donor to all of our homes. Pre-covid, every Habitat house was given a stove and refrigerator free of charge! However, because of supply chain issues, we are no longer given refrigerators.
As you can imagine, our Habitat families are coming from apartments, or even staying with friends and family, and don't have the means to purchase these expensive, important appliances. This is where you come in! For the 5th Annual Big Give, we are raising money to purchase 3 refrigerators for our next Habitat Homes in South Sioux City, Alton, and Hospers! Thank you so much for helping to offset this unexpected additional cost and ensuring our families are set up for success in their new homes!
Bonus Bathroom
Project Details
A "typical" Habitat house is 3 bedrooms and 1 bathroom. But, we know that families come in all shapes and sizes. One of the families moving into our Sioux City twin homes has a hard-working mom and dad and 5 cute kiddos. With 7 people total we are adapting our plan to fit the family and are constructing 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms in this home.
This is where you come in! In 2021, we are building 4 homes, one of our biggest years ever, at a time when construction costs are at their highest. The estimated expense of the bonus bathroom is $5,000 and we need your help to finish this deserving family's dream home! Thank you Siouxland!
Opening Doors
Project Details
Our next home build project is slated to be a duplex in Sioux City. Help us welcome home the structure's new families with two new front doors for the project. Each and every time they turn the knob on their front door, these two families will remember your generosity and The Big Give 2020! Your donation will help us frame out the entries, purchase two new steel doors and provide coordinating hardware. Our Opening Doors project provides the physical entrances to the duplex and also protect all they hold dear inside the homes' walls. The doors represent stability and self-reliance for families and their futures.
