This Year's Project: Imagination Library Program
About Our Organization
MISSION: To improve lives by uniting the caring power of our community. For $30 a year, a child can recieve a book in the mail every month through the Imagination Library program. United Way works together with businesses, individual community members, nonprofits, schools, faith groups, government & the media, because it takes the whole community to get the kind of results we need. We believe in advancing the common good by fighting for the Health, Education, and Financial Stability of every person in Siouxland.
Current Project: Imagination Library Program
As simple as it sounds, reading regularly with children during their preschool years gives them the biggest boost toward a successful education they will ever get. Dolly Parton's Imagination Library will help parents read with their child. This United Way of Siouxland funded initiative works to make sure children in Siouxland have books of their own. Each month a new, carefully selected book will be mailed in your child's name directly to your home. He/she can look forward to new and exciting reading adventures until he/she turns five years old as long as you remain a resident of Siouxland.
- More than 95% of a child's brain is formed in the first 6 years of life
- Only 50% of parents read to their children in infancy
- The average parent given books to read to their child is 4 times more likely to do so
Any child between the ages of 0 to 5 years old can be signed up by a parent or guardian. This child will receive age appropriate books in his or her name once a month. The cost to run the program is roughly $30 a year per child or $150 for all 5 years a child is in the program. Our goal of $3,000 will allow 100 Siouxland kids to receive books at home.
Health, Education & Financial Stability
United Way fights for the health, education & financial stability of every person in our community. We do this by investing in programs focused on prevention & giving a hand-up, versus a hand-out. Here's what your support will help us focus on: HEALTH: Reducing bullying and violence, supporting healthy lifestyles and advancing healthy developmental growth of children through parenting EDUCATION: Increasing kindergarten readiness, grade appropriate reading levels and graduation rates FINANCIAL STABILITY: Providing access to resources that build financial stability & increase income potential; emergency services & basis human needs
