This Year's Project: Domestic Violence Shelter Door

About Our Organization

Haven House services began 46 years ago with an all-volunteer staff so we truly are aware of the challenges of sustaining programs. Our mission is to empower survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking/harrasment to resume control of their lives. We are committed to eliminating violence in the lives of all people through empowerment, education, and social action. Over the past fiscal year we served 484 victims in our 5-county service area; annual served in Dakota County alone was 293 victims.

Current Project: Domestic Violence Shelter Door

Haven House has an emergency shelter that houses individuals and families that are fleeing from situations involving Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, and Stalking/Harassment.  We have been working hard to make some much needed updates to our Dakota County shelter to make it feel more at home and safe for our clients.  This year we are asking the Big Give to help us replace our door at shelter get as the framing and locks are getting very old and warn and we need to get them updated.  We are also wanting to get a new keypad door knob as the numbers are starting to wear off on ours due to weather.  This handle is needed as every time we have someone move out of our shelter we have to change the code so that way only staff and current shelter clients know the code to get into the shelter.  We would also like to add a storm door to our exterior entrance as the last storm door broke and has since been removed.  This will allow an extra blanket of security and safety for our clients.  For all materials and installation of these three items the total quote is 1493.53.   In the last fiscal year our Dakota County Shelter was able to provide 1,353 nights of safe sleeping for 72 individual people.

Past Projects

  • Expansion of Services

    Project Details

Our goal is to build a children's room for our clients with children to have a safe and comfortable for their children to play while they are receiving the services that are needed when we relocate our satellite office to a building of our own that provides a more thriving therapeutic environment for survivors and their children and supports growth for more community services in South Sioux City, Nebraska. We have increased our numbers by 65% and can no longer provide a thriving therapeutic environment for our clients and their children. Our goal is to increase the number of children's advocacy while serving a diverse group of survivors. Haven House has outgrown our 3-office location of 700 sq feet and we are not able to fully serve our survivors as needed. We would like to expand to offer more services to Siouxland. We recently added a bedroom in our shelter which is increasing our numbers. After the pandemic, we have seen an increase in all of our numbers. We have seen an increase in child sexual assault cases and do not have a therapeutic environment for them to thrive. We want to expand our services to offer South Sioux City a child playroom during intake processes, support groups, and much more. All money donated will go directly to building our new office.

  • New South Sioux City Office

    Project Details

Haven House in South Sioux City, NE, has quickly outgrown its current office location. Due to an influx of donations, our staff is in desperate need of more space to accommodate the needs of our clients. With the small office space, it is difficult to provide our clients with an area to promote confidentiality while being able to store the necessary items for those in need. Any donation will be used to help build our new office to improve our space and better our relationship with clients and the community.

  • Shelter Renovations

    Project Details

Haven House is looking to make small renovations around our shelter. We strive to make our shelter as clean and as welcoming as possible! With this money we will be purchasing new blinds and curtains to help survivors have a peace of mind and security when they come to the shelter. We are looking to make some small renovations so we can always provide a clean, safe, and organized space for those starting a new journey towards an abuse free life.

  • Emergency Shelter Enhancement Project & Outreach Materials

    Project Details

Haven House is looking for funds to help enhance the living space at our domestic violence and sexual assault emergency shelter. Currently our shelter needs new flooring and minor interior and exterior updates. We are looking to replace the flooring in our entry way, kitchen, living room, hallway, and two bedrooms. We are hoping to be able to put in laminate floors to help upkeep the cleanliness and sanitation in our shelter on a daily basis. This year, we are also looking for outreach materials to increase our number of clients seeking services when fleeing domestic vioelnce and sexual asasult. This funding will also help us reach our goal to make it a more bright and pleasant environment for our families with children.
